Types of cataract surgery in Singapore
Phacoemulsification
Ultrasound energy breaks the clouded lens into tiny fragments, which are suctioned out through a small, self-sealing incision before a clear intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted.
The most common and well-established technique worldwide. Its recovery is quick, and is suitable for most patients.
Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS)
Bladeless approach where a laser makes the corneal incision, opens the lens capsule and softens the cataract before removal.
Potential advantages include:
- Quicker recovery: self-sealing laser incisions heal faster.
- Fewer complications: less reliance on manual instruments.
- Better outcomes: the laser fragments even dense cataracts for more complete removal.
Extracapsular Surgery
The clouded lens is removed in one piece through a larger incision, with the capsule left in place to support the new IOL.
Preferred when a cataract is too dense or advanced for phacoemulsification. Usually needs stitches and a longer recovery, so its reserved for cases where other techniques are unsuitable.

Which Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) Are Right For You
The lens implanted during surgery shapes how you see for years afterwards. Dr Fong will recommend which options are suitable for your eyes and lifestyle.
Monofocal
Gives clear vision at one distance, usually far. You will likely still need glasses for close-up tasks such as reading.
Multifocal / Trifocal
Provides clear vision across near, intermediate and far distances, greatly reducing your reliance on glasses. Because incoming light is split between focal points, some patients notice halos, glare or starbursts, particularly at night.
Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF)
Provides a continuous range of focus from distance to intermediate, with fewer night-time disturbances than multifocal lenses. It works well for computer work, cooking, shopping or reading the car dashboard, though small print may still require glasses at times.
Toric
Corrects astigmatism during cataract surgery, and can be combined with any of the lens types above.
